Who are OFSTED and what is their role?
Ofsted aims to improve lives by raising standards in education and children’s social care. We inspect and regulate thousands of organisations and individuals providing education, training and care – from childminders to training providers, schools to local authorities – and we share what we find.
They report directly to Parliament, parents, carers and commissioners. They are responsible for:
Inspecting
- maintained schools and academies, some independent schools, colleges, apprenticeship providers, prison education and many other educational institutions and programmes outside of higher education
- childcare, local authorities, adoption and fostering agencies, initial teacher training and teacher development
Regulating
- a range of early years and children’s social care services, making sure they’re suitable for children and potentially vulnerable young people
Reporting
- publishing reports of our findings so they can be used to improve the overall quality of education and training
What is a SIAMS Inspection?
A SIAMS inspection (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools), focuses on the impact of the Church school's Christian vision on pupils and adults within the school community. Inspectors will consider the school's vision, its provision and how effective that provision is.

It is recognised that schools will have a range of approaches to reflect their unique contexts and therefore SIAMS inspectors will appreciate that ‘one size’ does not fit all schools. Instead, they will take the school’s context into consideration and look at outcomes rather than processes.
Inspectors will continue to grade the school on the following overarching question:
‘How effective is the school’s distinctive Christian vision, established and promoted by leadership at all levels, in enabling pupils and adults to flourish?’
This question is explored through seven strands, which remain unchanged from the 2018 framework:
